Chicāgo (spr. schi-), zweitgrößte Stadt der Ver. Staaten, im Staate Illinois, an der Mündung des Flusses C. in den Michigansee, (1903) 1.873.880 E. (1/3 Deutsche); zahlreiche, durch Boulevards verbundene Parks (»Gartenstadt«), viele 16-20 stöckige Häuser (»Himmelskratzer«), Universität (1892); erster Vieh-und Getreidehandelsplatz der Erde, Viehhöfe und Schlächtereien, Endpunkt des Illinois- und Michigankanals. – 1829 gegründet, 1837 Stadt, große Feuersbrünste 1871 (8. bis 10. Okt.) und 1874 (14. Juli); Weltausstellung 1893.
